Lisa27 asks:
So my room mate seems to be pretty much deaf when she sleeps and I'm wondering if this is even possible? Her alarm clock will go off in the EARLY morning, wake me up, and yet she doesn't move. It continued going off for 5 minutes before I decided to turn it off myself and knocked over a bottle on my table across the room from her in the process. THIS (plastic bottle falling off the table) woke her up, so why doesn't the alarm? This is a continuous occurrence and it's really pissing me off. How should I discuss this with her w/o sounding like a total jerk, and even if it seems like there isn't a way to solve it?

adam32m says:
Unusual sounds tend to wake people up. The bottle falling over isn't normal whereas she hears the alarm all the time. Switching up the alarm, both the loudness and tune, should help a lot.

I'm a senior in high school and will soon be going to college. I was considering going to my local 4 year university instead of moving off right away. My local 4 year university has low SAT and GPA acceptance scores. This is of great concern to me. I plan to spend 2-4 years at this local university and I am afraid that another university will not accept me from my local one. I am a GA merit scholar and have been getting many college letters in the mail and my heart hurts somewhat when I receive them. I don't want to go move from home right away, I just don't want to make a mistake. I work hard in school and I don't want people to judge me poorly for going to a university with those low SAT/GPA scores. Does this really matter in the long run? Would it hurt me to spend some years at this university and would I be able to successfully transfer to another in the state? I hope so... I'm just very worried. I've been worried for quite sometime. Sometimes I think, "Why have I been trying so hard in school if I'm going to a school that will accept just about anyone?" But I also wouldn't want to go to an expensive private college where I would feel uncomfortable. And I don't need any one to tell me that I should just 'try' going there, because I know that I will be very distraught going to a private school right out of high school. I want a good education, that's all. Do you think this is a good path to take? Going to a local university, then transferring? Is undergrad really important?

adam32m says:
A university with a lower SAT and GPA acceptance score requirement doesn't mean that it isn't a good place to get a good education. The same is true for schools with high SAT and GPA acceptance score requirements, too. Undergrad is important, but it's more about what you do during that time and not so much where you did it at. Most of the people who get accepted to these schools don't make it past 2 years, the smart ones survive. So even if you didn't transfer and graduated from your local uni, that tells employers something about you.

adam32m says:
You should put out-of-state until you are granted residency.

I'm a sophomore as an undergrad, but I want to go to grad school for psychology. I want my Ph.D and to be a clinical psychologist. I'm paranoid that I'm not doing something more with my summer. I'm taking two courses at my community college, but will grad schools see that I'm not working and consider less of me? I don't have a car and so have no way of getting to a job. Can I stop worrying or not having a job going to look awful?

adam32m says:
Graduate schools won't know whether you have a job or not. Most graduate programs look at your academic transcript, test scores, and references.

Keepmecompany asks:
If you want to major in something in college such as say film, and your gpa isnt exactly a 4.0 but you can back up a fair amount of evidence to show that one specific area is your passion, such as film for example, does that improve your chances of getting accepted into that college or keeps it the same?

adam32m says:
If you can demonstrate passion and skill, especially for something like film, that is a bigger factor than a GPA. Schools would rather have a student who is good at film than book smart and horrible at film.

How do i make a proposal to the dean to take a class that i need to graduate? I am suppose to graduate in the fall but i just found out yesterday that one of the classes i am taking in the fall i need a prerequisite before i take it. I was suppose to take prerequisite class and the class that you need a prerequisite to get in. I just found this out yesterday. My advisor is about to be fired this semester. So i had been dealing with the department assistant. Nobody told me this. Now they are saying that i might have to go to class in the spring time just to take one course. So i decided i am going to fight based on the grades that I have received while at my college. I currently hold a 3.3 grade average and I have made the dean's list every semester since i have been at this institution. How should i go about fighting to take both classes at the same time. *** Note you don't need a math course as prereq its just another marketing management course as prereq.. when i transferred to this school i took a lot of courses at my other college without having a prereq and this school accepted those courses knowing that.***

adam32m says:
There should be a paper form available for this situation. I know in my department it is placed along with other forms outside of the Dean's office. They won't make it easy, but it should be able to be done.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello! I am a sophomore at University and I need a little advice on a roommate related subject. I am in a triple (last time I am living in a dorm - hopefully we will get an appartment next year) so it can get a bit crowded althugh we do have a lot of space all things considered. However, I am currently single and my two friends both have boyfriends. Sometimes it feels as though I live with three or four roommates and most of the time they sleep over. So I don't want to be the friend who confronts her other friends because she feels neglected. I feel as though this is more of a problem with respect for everyone living in the room. One of my roommates even had sex six feet away from me while I was still sleeping. I mentioned it the next morning - I felt like I kept my composure quite well, but I was brimmming with fury. She felt awful about it so I don't want to bring it up again, but I can't imagine why she thought that would be okay. I also try to be very respectful when they are trying to sleep and I wake up early in the mornings. However, when I am trying to go to sleep and it is around midnight, it might be nice if they shut off the TV or kept talking down to a dull roar. Just yesterday one of my roommates was going to come in and wake up my roommate and her boyfriend who were up until 5:30 working on papers the night before just to watch TV. I know and accept that people will have lifestyle differences, but I think that they need to be a bit more respectful. I am sure that there are things that I do to annoy them too, but at least I always consider them when when I am doing something in the room while they are there. So I was just hoping I could get some opinions on what I should do - if anything. Or if I am complaining too much! Thanks!

adam32m says:
I've been there. You need to talk to them about it. The TV and talking loudly are normal things, people don't notice how loud they are sometimes. It isn't unreasonable for them to lower the sound or talk quietly.

Ok. So when you attend a community college and you want to transfer to a University. Will they still look only at your high school transcript, or will they be more focusing on how well your doing at the college?

adam32m says:
They will look at your SAT or ACT score, your high school transcript as well as your college transcript. Basically, they look at everything just as they would if you were applying right out of high school. Since your community college is the most current information, they will tend to focus more on that than your high school.

I attended a university for 2.5 years and during my last two semesters, I was placed on academic probation and then suspended. There are two options in the school's policy for re-admittance. The first is to attend a community college, and accomplish acceptable grades, for at least one year before re-applying. The other option is to not attend any colleges for one year, and reapply. Except for this current semester, I haven't attended any college since being suspended. It has been 2 years since I attended that university. I'm currently enrolled at a university with 5 week courses. I have taken 2 courses so far and have a 3.5 GPA. I am almost 3 weeks into a course right now and have an A. I would like to apply to my previous university but I'm not sure which is the best way to apply. Would my chances be better if I apply as a non-degree seeking student, and then after completing a certificate program, apply as a transfer? Or would it be better to just apply as a transfer student? I would rather apply as a transfer because financial aid does not cover non-degree programs. However, I also want to do whatever I can to get accepted. I'm hoping to start at this university in fall 2010. I'm wondering if I should wait until I have a few more classes on my transcript before applying as well?

adam32m says:
If the University has a rolling admission, I would wait until I had more classes on my transcript (especially if I knew they would be good grades). I think your chances would be better as a transfer student. Your references will be important in your readmission, so you should try to get people who know you have improved academically to be your references.

ight so heres the thing,im starting college in the fall.i have planed on moving for the past 6 months while i went away from home for a lil bit.but now that i get home i really want to stay here and go to college here.i have been in some trouble and i am afraid that if i stay here i will end up not finishing skool and geting back into dumb shit.should i risk it?or should i go to the skool that i have planed to for the last 6 months?

adam32m says:
I have seen this happen to people I know before, and it seems that it is better to get away from a bad place. If you might not finish school at home for certain reasons, it isn't worth the risk. Go and start your life fresh.
