I am currently in the military, but about to reenter the civilian ranks. Now that I have money to attend college, I am looking to attend a major university. Does the fact that I am older ,been 6 yrs since HS, and a veteran help my chances to get accepted?

adam32m says:

Well a questions thats been bothering me is that if you go to a public or private school will that effect what college you get into? Like i've been a private schoolie all my life, but i think im going to a public school when i move to san francisco. So im scared, should i go to public, private, or college prep? or does it even matter? =/ im so confused.

adam32m says:
It doesn't matter that much.

j asks:
I am worried about getting into college. I am a junior now but I had a lot of issues during freshman year, I had two pink slips (I don't know if they even matter), was suspended, and then expelled from a good school for an embarassing reason, but nevertheless an expulsion is an explusion no matter what it's for (right?). I also had cumulative grades of 2 B, 3 C and 1 D and my GPA was 2.1 (something like that). Now i've been in some dumb neighborhood HS so I'm doing very good. my GPA is 3.4 now (after sophmore year) and I've been taking a lot of AP and honors classes and doing lots of school activities and anything I can to make up for my stupid mistakes, but I am still very worried about what colleges will think when they see my school record and if they will still want me. I would like to know what I could do to increase my chances of getting into a good school and what kind of colleges would still accept me after that. (like community, public, private, ivy league...) By the way, I want to study Pre-Med... I appreciate your help =]

adam32m says:
Some schools may want you even more because it's obvious you have changed dramatically for the better. Ivy league is the only type of school that wouldn't accept, but, they only accept about 1% of high school students, so it wouldn't be because of your freshman year. Most other schools will probably accept you, so jus keep up the good work!

I am a sophomore in high school. What are some things I can do now [outside of taking AP classes] that will help me get into better colleges?

adam32m says:
extracurricular activities, get better at writing essays, study 15 minutes more than you do now. In other words, a lot of little things.

Harder classes will help a lot.

Chemistry. Most students get a's and b's so it's fine. I can't say whether you are smart enough (smartness goes beyond grades) or good enough, only you and your close peers will know that.

I'm currently enrolled in a two year school. I will be transfering soon, I've been looking at my options and I have it narrowed down to three schools. I have a current GPA of 3.5, so my question is should I go for a school that I feel will challenge me or should I go for the school that I've always wanted to go to but has a min. GPA requirement of a 2.2?

adam32m says:
I would choose the school that had the better progam for my major.

Josh asks:
Due to reasons that are too hard to explain, I will be 22 as a freshmen. Will I have trouble connecting with people 4 years younger than myself? I just have this feeling I will be the weird old dude that nobody hangs out with.

adam32m says:
It's possible. It would depend on your maturity level, and if you had similiar interests. There are clubs that you may have an interest in which would help. I have a friend who was 22 and a freshman last year. He moved off campus after one semester because he couldn't stand being around immature people. He made a alot of friends with upperclassmen, which suits his personality.

LoveThatFallenAngel asks:
i am a junior in HS, and they just started the "how to get through senior year and how to apply for college" crap... and its really got me thinkin.. not stressin, just thinkin... i found this really amazing school in missouri (i live in michigan) that i fell in love with ever since my first trip there when i was eight. and i know missouri purdy darn well and the last couple years my mind has been saying "okay im going to college of the ozarks, and after school is done im gonna settle in missouri".... but lately my thinking towards that has been changing a lot. i have already made such amazing friends this year, ones that you want to keep FOREVER!! and they are the kind of people that would take bullets for ya and vice versa. they all tell me "im gonna sooooo hate you forever if you move out of state for college" (just kiddingly, but also serious)...... so i have no clue what to do... ive found some purdy neat schools up here... and im just not sure what to do anymore.. got any advice on that???

adam32m says:
I had awesome friends in high school. They were the best friends I ever had. But we don't talk much now. Why? Because we moved on to new things. No one can keep u with each other's new lives and it would be silly to try. You will want to meet new people at college, and if you go to one where your friends are, you will have a hard time getting your own social life. People change after college, and if you go to the same school, you won't be able to grow into the person you are supposed to be.

Go to a school where it is good for you. Whether it is in Missouri or Michigan. If some of your friends end up there, great! Having friends from high school isn't such a bad thing like I tried to make it seem, but don't base your decision on what your friends want. During the summer you can all still be together too.

Lyssi asks:
I'm in 10th grade and a lot of people in my grade are already planning where they're going to college and everything. I know I want to go somewhere in New York City, maybe for Journalism, Creative Writing, or Languages, but I have no idea what schools are even in the city. What are some state schools that have good departments in these areas of study? Or, if you could reccommend a site that allows me to look through a few schools that would interest me?

adam32m says:
Most people recommend collegeboard.com, but I used xap.com when I was looking at colleges and it was a lot easier.

For state schools, go to http://www.suny.edu/student/search_programs/currfd_oas_main.cfm to search for programs you are interested in.
